MONTBLANC SAFETY PEN - ITALIAN FILIGREE OVERLAY

The practice to embellish standard fountain pen models with rolled gold overlays was very common in Italy in the early 1900's.

Since the early 1900s through the 1940s most major pen makers had in fact their main products enriched with semi-precious overlays which were extremely attractive for the Italian public.  Waterman, Parker, Astoria, Kaweco, Montblanc and others marketed pens with rich o filigree, repoussè or high reief overlays whose style changed  over the years according to fashion.

Montblanc had its overlays mainly manufactured in Milan by the Cavaliere Brothers' workshop.

This Montblanc Nr 2 long shows one of the most attractive examples of Italian filigree overlay. The cap top is richly decorated, covering the traditional white star. The style of the filigree is very similar to those we can find on Waterman pens of the same era.

The nib is very smooth and nicely flexible.
