TODCO SLEEVE FILLER BLACK EBONITE

This is a very intriguing sleeve filler which can be dated to the early 1900s. It is engraved with "Todco" - T20-175" and it is fitted with a warranted 14 ct gold nib.

The clip is stamped "WHH-Roller Clip". The "WHH" initials offer some indication as these initials are a maker's mark mostly found on silver ( the clip is stamped Silver), indicating the company W. H. Haseler Ltd., founded by  William Hair Haseler, a British silversmith and  jeweler based in Birmingham.

But the British origin is denied by the fact that the clip shows "U.S Patent", bringing the pen back to the US. It appears anyhow that the Haseler Company exported their metal and silver components which could be used by various pen manufacturers.

I have not been able to find  any information on the brand name Todco. The connection with Mabie Todd and Co. would seem the most probable explanation for the name but this is just a forced supposition as there is no evidence whatsoever of such a connection.

This pen is therefore offered for what it is, a very fascinating ebonite sleeve filler with an open research on its origin. The nib is 14 ct gold, absolutely rigid with an EF tip.
